For my literacy center I want to provide all I can to ensure that my students excel at reading, writing, listening, and speaking. I will include educational books that I know will make an impact on their learning, journal prompts to encourage their writing skills, posters to remind them to be good listeners, and plenty of chances for practicing public speaking! The picture below is an example of how I would like my classroom to be set up.

Reading:
There are so many good books out there that deal with the senses, I will begin the week with this book- The Five Senses, by Keith Faulkner. The students and I will discuss this book at rug time and I will explain anything misunderstandings about the senses.

During our 1 week of dealing with this theme I will switch the books out in the reading center and replace them with books that deal with sight, smell, taste, hearing, and touching. I will also leave the book by Faulkner in the reading center for students to read when they want.

Writing:
Each day we will do a short journal entry. I will provide prompts such as... "One time I tasted..."
"My favorite thing to smell..." "I heard..." "If you touch..." "My eyes can see...". Students can also think of their own prompts if they want. I will ask the students to write at least four sentences for each entry. We will have fun with these! I may also use a template like the picture below and let the students fill these out. There will also be worksheets if the students finish their journal prompts quickly, example is the popcorn worksheet below.

Listening:
We will listen to the video below and talk about having on our "listening ears" in the classroom. I will also have posters displaying listening rules. I will have books on CD in my center, accompanied by a CD player and earphones for students who want to have a quiet time listening.

Speaking:
Students will practice their speaking skills by telling a story about something they experienced with their senses, they may also bring an item to school that goes along with their story. I will incorporate approximately 3-4 of these show and tells into the schedule each day during rug time.
